The work consists of two parts: a site-specific installation and a video. The site-specific installation is a small section of wall, its bricks made of the dust of the exhibition site (a unoccupied commercial space in Shanghai). The video work records the process of dust collected from the site being pressed into a brick, and eventually returning to the state of dust under the influence of wind.
Dust contains spatial memory, internalizing various events, objects, and processes of human activities. As a collection of “debris”, dust is also one of the symbols of modern cities in both social and environmental aspects. The work aims to explore dust as a medium and extend its symbolic significance to the tenseless “ruins” in a contemporary context.
